Centre for Research on Start-ups and Risk Financing

Visit website

Centre for Research on Startups and Risk Financing (CREST), is an Institute of Eminence-Research Centre at IIT Madras. The growth in the Indian start-up ecosystem, which has become one of the world’s largest, has been primarily driven by policy and practice. The objective of CREST is to create and disseminate new knowledge on the Start-up ecosystem through scholarly research, commissioned studies, and collaborative work. The thought leadership of CREST would complement policy and practice in contributing to the growth of the start-up ecosystem in the country. The evidence from various studies would help in informed policy formulation and practitioner decision making. A major contribution of CREST has been the development of the Information Platform on the Indian Start-up Ecosystem. The platform integrates information from scattered sources on the different stakeholders in the Indian Start-up ecosystem, viz., Start-ups, Angel investors, Incubators, VCs, Government Funding, Debt Funding, and so on. Through its development partner, YNOS Venture Engine, the platform is now accessible across the globe for researchers, investors, startup founders, corporates, and so on. By providing easy access to such high quality information, CREST contributes to democratising entrepreneurship and conducting high quality research ;

Centre for Strings, Gravitation and Cosmology

We are living in an age of discovery in gravitation and cosmology. In particular, the detection of gravitational waves and the dawn of precision cosmology have given us precise tools to understand the most extreme cosmic events from the quantum fluctuations of the inflationary universe just a Planck time after its birth to the merging of black holes that radiate three or more solar masses in the form of gravitational radiation. The aim of the Centre will be to pool together our efforts and connect theorists with various expertise and phenomenologists to examine whether we can systematically test the fundamental paradigms of classical and quantum theories of gravitation and understand our universe.

Cybersecurity Center

The importance of designing methods to protect data in the modern world cannot be overstated. The urgency of this need is reflected in mainstream media - newspapers and websites are full of news about critical user information, be it credit card numbers, medical data, or social security information, being compromised and used illegitimately. Juxtaposed with the need of securing digital information, is the equally urgent need of enabling and assisting the ”Big Data" revolution. We have already begun to glimpse the sheer power of massive-scale data analysis, with applications ranging from cloud computing to advertising to social science studies to smart meters and smart cities and so on.Can the divide between utility and security be bridged? Through our centre, we aim to construct systems which achieve strong mathematical security that users can trust, while supporting advanced functionalities that enable and assist cloud computing.The authors of this proposal, together with their collaborators, have a strong track record of making high impact, globally visible contributions in designing such systems via novel scientific methods that synthesize ideas from cryptography, distributed systems, algorithms and cybersecurity at large. ; ;

Extra Terrestrial Manufacturing (ExTeM)

A new Center of Excellence focused on advancing technologies for Extra Terrestrial Manufacturing (ExTeM) has been established at IIT Madras, filling a significant gap in space-related manufacturing research in India. While current efforts primarily concentrate on developing technologies for manufacturing launch vehicles and satellites, there is a growing need for capabilities to manufacture items in space for both space and Earth applications. This necessity arises from increasing human exploration of space, including plans for settlements in distant locales that would necessitate prolonged journeys aboard spacecraft. Additionally, the unique benefits of microgravity for manipulating material structures present compelling opportunities.The proposed center aims to tackle these challenges by developing a diverse array of manufacturing technologies tailored to microgravity environments, encompassing materials from concrete to metal foams, single crystals, and biomanufacturing. A multidisciplinary team comprising faculty from aerospace, civil, electrical, mechanical, and materials engineering, biotechnology as well as the sciences, will collaborate on these endeavors. Recognizing the inherent disparities between space-based and Earth-based manufacturing processes—such as limited space, power, and the complexities of managing process inputs and outputs—the center will pursue both fundamental research and technology development. The center plans to conduct a series of microgravity tests using platforms ranging from drop-towers to parabolic flights and sub-orbital flights. These tests and resulting prototypes are poised to garner international attention, elevating both the center and IIT Madras onto the global stage. Furthermore, the center's establishment is likely to inspire curiosity among young minds and foster a renewed sense of excitement within the IIT Madras community. ;
